From pre-op preparation to anesthesia monitoring and recovery, you bring strong attention to detail, a commitment to sterility and patient safety, and clear, respectful communication with clients and teammates.

Your Experience & Skills
- Experience: Minimum 1 year experience working with a surgeon or equivalent experience is required.
- Animal Handling: Experienced in properly managing and looking after horses is required
- Anesthesia Expertise: Advanced skills in all aspects of anesthesia protocols, induction, and monitoring; GKX experience is not required but would be a bonus
- Surgical Knowledge: In-depth understanding of operating room protocols
- Emergency Response: Ability to remain calm and focused in high-pressure situations
- Work Flexibility: Willingness to work additional hours as needed
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written skills for client and team interactions

About The Hospital
Elgin Veterinary Hospital is a Bovine and Equine emergency referral and primary care facility that offers the best in medical and surgical treatments.
You’re Willing And Able To
- Veterinary Support: Assist veterinarians in delivering high-quality care, advocating for animals, and educating clients.
- Patient Flow & Medical Records: Maintainaccurate medical charts and ensure efficient patient flow.
- Diagnostics & Procedures: Performblood draws, radiographs, physical evaluations, and catheter placements.
- Surgical Assistance: Induce, maintain, and recover anesthesia, following surgical suite protocols, and scrub in to assist with surgery as needed.
- Patient Admission & Discharge: Greet clients, help unload and stall horses, and ensure patients go home with appropriate discharge and medication.
- Treatment & Facility Care: Ensure clean, sterile environments, safe restraining techniques, sterilize packs and instruments, restock supplies, and properly dispose of medical supplies.
- Client Communication: Explain long-term care plans and provide compassionate support for clients.
- Daily Hospital Operations: Support supervisors and teammates with assigned daily, weekly, and monthly tasks while maintaining a clean practice.
- Client Care: Strong relationship-building skills with patients and pet owners
- Teamwork & Independence: Works well both collaboratively and autonomously
- Positive Mindset: Maintains a professional and resilient attitude under pressure
Physical and Schedule Requirements:
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and safely assist in the movement, positioning, and restraint of equine patients (typically 1,000+ lbs) using proper equipment, team support, and established safety protocols, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to stoop, bend, and stand for extended periods of time as required by the role, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Work Environment: Ability to perform essential job functions outdoors in varying weather conditions (including heat, cold, rain, and icy conditions), with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Schedule Requirements: Monday-Friday day shift. Must be available for alternating Saturday morning shifts and on-call rotations, including nights and weekends.
